Art and Photography
Pathways engages a professional photographer and artist who lead workshops where clients are encouraged to access and express their own creative vision. Although art as therapy has traditionally been a part of psychiatric recovery, at Pathways, the engagement with art is not only therapeutic, but is a serious form of expression, the results of which are shown in galleries, published in our organization newsletter and displayed throughout the agency. Through the sense of accomplishment and community generated in these workshops, and the recognition of their work, clients gain confidence, enhance their interpersonal skills, and are motivated to enter or return to school and the job market.
In the Photography Workshop, participants learn how to use 35mm cameras. They take pictures in diverse settings, develop negatives and print black and white photographs. In the Visual and Writing Arts Workshop aspiring artists and writers tell their life stories, paint, draw or write. A variety of mediums are used and, when needed, instruction is provided with materials and skills. Bonded by the creative process, the workshops become a small supportive community where everyone is encouraged to initiate, communicate and accomplish what is essential, and to recover their sense of originality, confidence and joy. Workshop participants have exhibited at Lincoln Center’s Cork Gallery.
